The series is currently in production and filming is expected to wrap up in the next few months. House of the Dragon Release Date

The House of the Dragon is an upcoming American television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal. It is a sequel to the A Song of Ice and Fire novels, set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The series will focus on the history of House Targaryen and is expected to premiere on HBO in 2022.

George R. R. Martin has stated that he originally intended for the Dunk & Egg novellas (which are set 90 years before A Game of Thrones) to be adapted into a television series, but plans changed when the success of Game of Thrones led to it being adapted instead. According to him, “It all could have been one big story, but then I started thinking about what else was going on in Westeros at that time… So if you go back far enough, there’s Aegon’s Conquest, which is really where everything kicks off.” While many details about the show are still under wraps, we do know that it will star Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen (the younger brother of King Viserys), Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower (the daughter of Otto Hightower, Hand of the King), Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Corlys Velaryon (a Lord who married into House Targaryen and is known as “The Sea Snake”), Eve Best as Rhaenys Targaryen (Aegon’s first wife), Paddy Considine as Viserys Targaryen (Daemon’s older brother and King), Fabien Frankel as Aegor Rivers (“Bittersteel”, a bastard son of Aegon IV who raised rebellion against his half-brother Jaehaerys II), Rhiann Maher as Nymma Manwoody (Wife to Lord Manwoody and Lady Tyrell’s wet nurse), Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria (“Mistress Merryweather”, a clever slave who becomes one with dragon blood and eventually Daenerys’ handmaiden/spy).

Condal said in an interview with EW: “One thing that’s really interesting about this period we’re exploring now in Westeros history is [that] all these different elements — swordplay, political intrigue — they all feel very modern because Westeros kind of pushes back against them.”
