Winter is coming…to HBO. The network has announced that the Game of Thrones prequel will begin filming in early 2020. The untitled series is set thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones and chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour.
The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which tells the story of House Targaryen.
HBO has been tight-lipped about the prequel, but we do know that it will star Naomi Watts as a “socialite with a dark secret.” We also know that Oscar nominee Saphie Turner (Game of Thrones, Dark Phoenix) and Tony Award winner Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) have joined the cast.
No word yet on when exactly the prequel will air, but production is set to begin in early 2020, so hopefully we’ll see it sometime next year. In the meantime, there are still two more seasons of Game of Thrones to enjoy (and agonize over).
